Awana FAQ Print E-mail
CBC Kids
What is Awana?

That's a great first question.  We have all kinds of information about what Awana is over on our main Awana page.

When and where does Awana meet?

Clubs meet at 6:30 p.m. each Wednesday night starting September 14, 2011.  The Puggles and Cubbies clubs run until 8:00 p.m.  Sparks and T & T ends at 8:15 p.m.  We ask that a responsible adult remain on the church premises if you have a child in Puggles or Cubbies.

Puggles meets in the Park Avenue room in KidsVille. Cubbies take the Sonshine Ranch Highway down to the basement of KidsVille.  Sparks begins in the new Awana room (#216) at the east end of the church building, but ends over at the gym.  T & T clubbers can be dropped off and picked up at the new Awana room (#216).

What are handbooks and sections?

New clubbers begin the year with their club's entrance booklet.  Upon completion of the booklet, your child is eligible to wear the Awana uniform and may begin on a handbook. Both the entrance booklet and the handbooks are divided into "sections", usually an activity or a memory verse or two.  To complete the section, the clubber must recite the verses to their leader.

Awards for achievement are given upon completion of Bible memory work and activities contained in your child's handbook.  Special awards are given at the end of the club year for those who complete an entire handbook.

What goes on at Awana?

Club meetings consist primarily of Bible memory work, games, activities, and a brief Bible message.  From time to time, our clubs will have a special night (see the 2011–2012 Awana calendar).  For the older children, there are a few events off the church property, like Bonfire Night, Christmas Caroling, and Bike Night. You will be advised in advance of these special activities.

In order for your child to participate in an activity off the church premises, we must have a current parent/guardian consent form completed and signed. You can also pick up a copy of this form from the Awana office (room #207).

How much does it cost?

Club dues of 50 cents per week are collected from each clubber to help offset a portion of the Awana program's cost. If you wish to pre-pay the dues for the entire year, it is $15.00 per clubber.

Handbooks for Cubbies and T & T are $8.00; for Sparks they are $9.00.  Puggles T-shirts, Cubbies vests, and Sparks vests cost $11.00; T & T shirts are $15.00.

Books may be purchased and uniforms may be ordered from our Awana office (room #207).  We accept cash and checks.  Please make checks payable to Calvary Baptist Church.

Is there parent involvement?

Absolutely, yes!  As parents, you play a most important role in Awana.  Your child will need your encouragement—and probably reminders—to prepare their handbook sections in advance of Wednesday night.  Generally a child who prepares just ten minutes a day will be able to successfully finish their entire book before the end of the club year.

There are also many other helpful resources for parents on the Awana website.

How can I help my child memorize all those verses?

Check out the Awana site for some good tips for helping your child memorize Bible verses.

What's new this year?

Lots! Wednesday night will truly be a family night at Calvary Baptist Church beginning, September 14, 2011.  We will be offering dinner each week in our fellowship hall from 5:30–6:30 p.m.  Meals are provided on a donation basis, and we encourage your whole family to come.

Then families will split up for their own special time.  We have a great nursery for the very little ones (0–23 months), Awana clubs for kids age 2 through 6th grade, and our new youth group program Youth Standing Firm, led by Scott Elwart, for 7–12 graders.

Adults can choose between our new Family Club with Pastor Graham, or the Adult Bible Study with Pastor Matt.

Questions or concerns?

If you have any other questions or concerns during the club year, please speak to your child's leader or contact our Awana Commander Connie Simpson.

Awana ClubsAwana is a club for kids ages 2 years through 6th grade where we learn God’s Word, play games, sing songs, and lots of other fun stuff! Join us every Wednesday night September through May from 6:30–8:15 p.m. (8:00 for Puggles and Cubbies)

Puggles

Awana Puggles is an enriching program for pre-Cubbies children (2 year olds) that presents the basic biblical concepts that we are a unique creation of God, and that God loves us very much. Puggles teaches toddlers simple lessons through teaching cards, activities, crafts, music and more.

Our Puggles meet from 6:30–8:00 p.m. in the Park Avenue room in KidsVille.

Cubbies

Cubbies is designed for children age 3 through pre-Kindergarten (must be potty-trained). Games, puppets, crafts, awards and other activities make for a lively experience where fun and learning go hand-in-hand. Bible-centered handbooks and activities help build a solid understanding of the basics of Christianity at an early age. After only two years, your child will have learned 55 memory verses. Your child will reap many benefits from his involvement in this exciting program.

Cubbies is for 3 & 4 year old children, and meets from 6:30–8:00 p.m. downstairs in the Sonshine Ranch Highway, KidsVille.

Sparks

Sparks is the Awana club for children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade and is firmly grounded in Scripture. The three handbooks feature basic truths about God, Jesus Christ, salvation and the Bible. In three years a Sparky will learn and review over 96 verses, many of which cover salvation and key Christian doctrines. Sparks meetings combine a clear and consistent presentation of the Gospel message with fun, to create an atmosphere of excitement for each child who attends.

Our Sparks meet in the new Awana room (#216) at the east end of the church building but they will be picked up at the gym at the end of the night.

T & T

The name Truth & Training reflects the passion of Awana to teach 3rd–6th graders the truth of God's Word and to train them to follow Christ in their daily lives. Our weekly meetings expose children to the Gospel message, Scripture memory, Bible study, awards, team-oriented games and gut-busting fun. The Bible-centered curriculum helps children build a firm foundation for their faith, hide God's Word in their hearts, and apply the truth of Scripture to their daily lives.

T & T meets in the new Awana room (#216) at the east end of the church building.

If you want to know even more about our Awana program at Calvary Baptist Church, check out our Awana FAQ page.

All of these children's programs begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings throughout the school year. Parents can join our new Family Club or Adult Bible Study, but are always welcome to stay with their children, especially younger ones.

This year Awana begins Wednesday, September 14. View the full 2011–2012 Awana schedule.
